ARIZONA ROSARY CELEBRATION 2011

Arizona Rosary Celebration 2011
Honoring Mary Under Her Title Our Lady of Guadalupe

For the past 35 years, Rosary Sunday, held in Phoenix, has been one of the largest annual public Rosary celebrations in the United States. This tradition is not changing. However, we are blessed this year with the opportunity to expand the celebration in the Diocese of Tucson. To recognize this new Multi-Diocesan event, Rosary Sunday has been renamed the "Arizona Rosary Celebration" with proceedings over two days in both Tucson and Phoenix. This major celebration in honor of Our Lady is sponsored by the Arizona Knights of Columbus and held in conjunction with the Dioceses of Tucson and Phoenix. Assistance is given by many groups and organizations, including the Legion of Mary and Catholic Daughters. Invitations to participate are being extended to all parishes and groups in each diocese.

GUEST SPEAKER

Rev. John Phalen, C.S.C.
Director of Holy Cross Family Ministries

Arizona Rosary Celebration is honored this year to have as our main speaker Father John Phalen, CSC.  He is familiar to many Catholics as the Director of Holy Cross Family Ministries, continuing the work of the Radio Priest, the Servant of God Father Patrick Peyton. He is also a member of the Hispanic Ministry Committee of the Congregation of Holy Cross and has given retreats, conferences and presentations in many Spanish speaking countries. Father Phalen is Chaplain of Council 1462 and the Fourth Degree Cardinal O’Connell Assembly of the Knights of Columbus.

Father‘s most recent book is on how we live the Mysteries of the Holy Rosary, explaining how to compare the Mysteries of the Rosary to the mysteries in our lives. It is in that type of contemplation that we conform our lives to the life of Christ. Father relies heavily on the vision of Blessed John Paul II who loved the Rosary so well, and on the spirit of the Servant of God Father Peyton.

World Youth Day Testimony

Arizona Rosary Celebration is fortunate to have two youth representing the 1.5 Million Catholic youth who attended the 11th World Youth Day Celebration held in Madrid, Spain, August 2011. The two youth,  one from the Diocese of Tucson and one from the Diocese of Phoenix, will provide testimony regarding their experience at World Youth Day. Their testimony is a witness to the continuing evangelization of the Church in the 21st Century.

Ms. Emily Van Loan represents the youth of the Diocese of Tucson. A junior at Salpointe Catholic High School in Tucson, Emily is a member of Saint Peter and Paul Parish. She attended St. Elizabeth Ann Seton school and was a member of the first class to graduate from SEAS! Emily is very involved in high school theater and serves as a State Student Officer on the Arizona Thespian Board and is involved in Salpointe's drama production. Emily sews pillowcases for an organization called Heads at Ease which sends them to members of the military.

Ms. Tara Smith represents the youth of the Diocese of Phoenix.  After graduating from Notre Dame Preparatory High School in Scottsdale, Tara went to Franciscan University of Steubenville for one year, then served a year with NET Ministries evangelizing youth throughout the United States. She is now a senior at ASU and is closely involved with St. Paul's Outreach which allows Catholic youth to live in households together committing themselves to prayer and fellowship.
